Metros resume between Monument and Heworth after train breaks down at Gateshead Stadium

A broken down train at Gateshead Stadium halted all Metros between Monument and Heworth.

The disruption on the Tyne and Wear Metro line began at around 3.50pm on Wednesday as a train failed at Gateshead Stadium station.

Nexus then arranged for the train, which was blocking the line, to be moved off before services resumed.

While trains were suspended between Monument and Heworth in both directions, tickets were being accepted on Go North East buses 26 and 27.

The line was reopened at around 4.50pm.

Across the network, there are ongoing delays due to the earlier disruption.

A Nexus spokesperson said: “A Metro train has broken down at Gateshead Stadium.

"This occurred just before 4pm and it means that we currently don’t have any services running between Monument and Heworth in both directions.

“Staff are at site and are going to use a different Metro train to shunt the failed one into the sidings at Pelaw."

After the line reopened, the spokesperson added: "Services have now resumed between Monument and Heworth.

"We are running to all destinations but not to timetable. This was due to a train failure. That train has now been moved into the sidings."
