Metropolitan Tower plans revealed - and they don’t include the ’People Make Glasgow’ sign

A B-listed building is to be transformed into office and apartment space - and artists’ impressions show a very different vision to the current landmark familiar to Glaswegians.

The old City of Glasgow College building, known as the Met Tower, was put on the map shortly before the 2014 Commonwealth Games when it was branded with its iconic pink People Make Glasgow sign.

As reported on Glasgow Live, Osborne+Co acquired the site in January 2019, with plans for an extensive refurbishment to create office space at the 60 Hanover Street site, as well as serviced apartments on Cathedral Street.

A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) was submitted to Glasgow City Council at the time.

Now, as reported on Scottish Construction Now, a video featuring artists’ impressions of the site show what it could soon look like - and it may come as a shock to Glaswegians to find out that the famous People Make Glasgow sign will go.

Speaking in 2019, Will Hean, Development Director of Osborne+Co, said: “We will work with the council, Historic Environment Scotland and the wider city community to deliver a refurbishment that the city will be proud of and which will attract major inward investment.”

The development is expected to generate hundreds of construction jobs, as well as accommodating up to 1,200 employees.
