A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been charged after a taxi driver reported an assault in Essex.

PC Gareth Head has been charged with racially aggravated grievous bodily harm (GBH) following an allegation of assault on May 28, 2018.

A member of the public, Paul Roden-Flame, also faces a charge of GBH.

The charges relate to an alleged assault of a taxi driver who received medical treatment for a broken jaw. He then reported the incident to Essex Police.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation following a referral from MPS on October 2, 2018.

After the IOPC concluded its investigation on July 10, a report was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service in October 2019.

The CPS decided in February to charge PC Head and Mr Roden-Flame with racially aggravated GBH and an alternate charge of GBH.

Both men will appear at Basildon Magistrates Court on September 10.
