Metrolink services temporarily halted on Ashton line after crash involving car and tram

Metrolink services were halted this afternoon after a crash involving a car and tram i n Tameside.

It happened at around 12:45pm on Lord Sheldon Way in Ashton-Under-Lyne.

A car collided with the Manchester-bound tram as it approached the Ashton West stop near Ashton Mosss.

Passengers described the tram attempting an 'emergency stop' before the car careered into it.

Police were called and trams were temporarily halted on the Ashton line between Asthon and Ashton Moss, whilst passengers on-board were evacuated.

A police spokesman said no one was injured in the collision.

"We were called shortly after 12.45pm to a report of a collision involving a car and a tram on Lord Sheldon Way, Ashton-under-Lyne" he said.

"Officers attended, no injuries were reported, and no arrests were made."

Passenger Holly Pimlott, 19, said there around 30 people on the service at the time of the crash.

"It had just left Ashton and was heading towards Ashton West when an emergency stop just happened from nowhere.

"Everyone was obviously a bit shocked. Then we looked out of the window and what looked like a burgundy coloured Ford Fiesta had crashed into us.

"After a couple of minutes the driver came out and said there had been a crash.

"The police turned up and they were talking to the driver as the tram driver went and got the ladders so we could climb down from ther tram."

A Metrolink spokesman said the cause had yet to be determined but was now under investigation.

They tweeted saying: "Due to an RTC at Ashton West, there are currently no trams operating between Ashton-Under-Lyne and Ashton Moss.

"Ticket acceptance is in place on the 216 bus service. "

Before later adding: This has now been resolved and we are now operating through to Ashton-Under-Lyne.

"Ticket acceptance has now ended.

"Thank you all for your patience."
