Metrolink services halted after man in his 70s was hit by a tram near the Arndale Centre

An elderly man man is in a potentially serious condition after being hit by a tram in the city centre.

The collision happened on High Street, in between Market Street and Shudehill, shortly before 7pm.

A man in his 70s was struck by a tram near the junction with Church Street, police said.

Paramedics as well as police attended and the man received treatment at the scene.

A GMP spokesman said the man's injuries are potentially serious and a collision investigation is underway.

Police tape was put up and services were halted for several hours on that stretch of the line while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Services on the Bury and Altrincham lines experienced delays as a result.

Services were not calling at the Shudehill or Market Street stops with customers advised to change at St Peters Square for services towards Piccadilly or Victoria.

Manchester Airport services ran to Victoria via Exchange Square.

Transport for Greater Manchester said the incident was clear at around 10.30pm.

It happened as thousands of fans were making their way to Old Trafford tonight for the match against Barcelona which added to the usual rush hour congestion on the network.
