Metrolink passengers don't need a ticket from today - if they use a contactless bank card

Metrolink passengers can use contactless bank cards to pay for tram journeys from today.

Instead of buying tickets, commuters can swipe their cards on smart readers located at each station.

The payment method has already been available on London transport for five years.

Travellers need to remember to swipe their cards at both the start and end of each journey, to avoid being charged more.

If people forget to touch-in at the first stop, they could be charged £30, and if they forget to touch-out at the final stop, they will be charged £4.60.

Users must use the same card to touch-in and touch-out.

They won't need to to touch-in or touch-out again if they are changing trams as part of a single journey.

The fare will be automatically deducted from the user's card, based on which zones they travel through, Metrolink bosses said.

Passengers will be charged the rate of adult single and 1-day travelcard prices.

Journey prices will be from £1.40 up to £7 for all zones.

Passengers will need to show ticket inspectors their contactless cards when they carry out checks.

If the device is not accepted by the inspection device, travellers may be charged up to £100.

Passengers are urged to remove other cards when they are making contactless payments, to avoid being charged twice.

Travellers can use Visa, Mastercard or Maestro cards if they have the contactless payment symbol.

Many contactless cards outside the UK can also be used.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said the introduction of contactless payments marks one of the first steps towards Our Network - his ten-year plan to improve transport across the region.

He said: "These initiatives are the first of many on our journey towards the integrated, London-style transport system we want to see here.

"Contactless payments on Metrolink in particular will be a major boost for many people, including commuters and the millions of visitors we get every single year.

"It is something people visiting London will already be familiar with and will make travel by tram easier, and improve access to jobs, leisure, skills and education opportunities across Greater Manchester."
