Metrolink line suspended after car driven onto tram tracks

Travellers are facing disruption on the Metrolink tonight after a car drove onto the tram tracks at New Islington, suspending the Ashton-under-Lyne line.

Customers are being told to use alternative transport as police and Metrolink officers work to move the car, which has driven into the tunnel between New Islington and Piccadilly Station.

It is currently unclear when services will resume.

The car appears to have stopped after driving down the tunnel that connects tram services between New Islington and Piccadilly.

In a tweet, Metrolink said: "Due to a car on the tracks at New Islington, the Ashton line is currently suspended. Customers can use their tickets and passes on the 216, 217 and 219 buses. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Greater Manchester Police and Transport for Greater Manchester have been contacted for comment.
