Metrolink delays in city centre after 12-year-old boy hit by tram

There were delays on the Metrolink tonight after a 12-year-old boy was hit by a tram in the city centre.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted that there was a road traffic incident on Aytoun Street at around 4.30pm.

An eyewitness tweeted a picture of a stationary tram with passengers being helped off.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were called to the scene at 4.28pm this afternoon to reports of a boy involved in a collision with a tram.

A spokesperson said the 12-year-old suffered minor injuries and has been taken to hsopital.

It is believed the road remained open while emergency services dealt with the scene, but the incident prevented trams passing through and resulted in delays and service changes.

Metrolink said in a tweet: "Due to a road traffic incident at Aytoun Street, Ashton services will run to Piccadilly only & Eccles services will run to Cornbrook only. We apologise for the inconvenience."

Some passengers complained that the incident was affecting their journeys.

At around 5.15pm, Metrolink tweeted that the incident had cleared and trams were once again moving through the city centre.

However, there are still delays on the Ashton, Bury and Altrincham lines.
