Metro to be suspended between St Peter's and South Hylton in Sunderland until June 2

A section of the Metro will be suspended until next month due to emergency repair work.

Nexus confirmed on social media on Tuesday that services between St Peter's and South Hylton will be suspended until June 2.

This is due to Network Rail carrying out repairs to the overhead lines near Sunderland station, which has been ongoing since Friday.

A spokesperson for Nexus said on social media: "Metro services between St Peter’s and South Hylton are to remain suspended until Tuesday June 2. Network Rail is carrying out emergency overhead line repairs at Sunderland.

"We are keeping in daily contact with Network Rail to see if the repair time will be shortened."

Nexus said there would definitely be no trains running at all between South Hylton and St Peter's in either direction during the suspension.

Every evening from 9pm the closure will be extended to East Boldon and South Hylton.

A bus replacement, number 901, will continue to run in the affected area for the duration of the work.
