The Tyne and Wear Metro plans to install passenger information display screens (PIDS) on more station concourses, it has revealed.
This will enable passengers to check service updates and next trains before they head underground and onto platforms.
A Nexus spokesperson confirmed to ChronicleLive: "We’re planning to put information screens in concourses so passengers know how the service is operating, this should happen later this year."
Since 2017, Newcastle Central's Metro Station has PIDS screens in the concourse, allowing travellers to see when the next trains are due before they pass the barriers and head downstairs.
But at other stations - including underground hubs - the screens are not available before ticket barriers or platforms.
At Monument station in Newcastle, for example, passengers have to go through the ticket barriers, down escalators and onto platforms if they want to find a screen which will tell them when the next services are due.
This can mean passengers buy single tickets and head onto the platform, only to find that there are delays, so they leave the station and fork out for alternative transport such as a bus or taxi.
Printed timetables are available at all stations, while refunds are available if a Metro service is delayed by at least 15 minutes.
Passengers are also advised to check Metro's website and social media accounts, including its 24 hours a day staffed Twitter page, @My_Metro, for latest service updates.
