Metro passengers given advice on travelling around on trains during coronavirus outbreak

Metro passengers have been assured that they can use the Metro as normal during the coronavirus outbreak.

Nexus , the public body which owns and manages Metro, is taking its advice from Public Health England and says commuters can be "confident" as they travel around the Tyne and Wear region.

At the moment there are no advised changes to Metro operations or in the way that the public should travel on the system, and passengers have been assured that trains and stations will be cleaned on a regular basis.

Customer services director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: "Passengers should continue to use the Tyne and Wear Metro system as usual.

"We are following the advice issued by Public Health England and at the moment they have not made any changes to the way that people use public transport services.

"If that advice changes then we will communicate that to all passengers immediately, but for now it is business as usual for Metro. Passengers don't need to be worried about travelling on the network."

Mr Lewis added: "We make sure our stations and trains are kept really, really clean and that means regular cleaning regimes for things like our ticket machines, the interiors of trains and all parts of our infrastructure."

Passengers are being encouraged to wash their hands throughout the day when they can and to cover their mouth when they sneeze or cough to help prevent the spread of infection.

It was revealed on Wednesday that the first person in Newcastle has been diagnosed with coronavirus and is now being treated in the Royal Victoria Infirmary 's Infectious Diseases Unit.

The risk to the public remains low and those who have come in contact with the person are being contacted.
