Metro passengers faced delays after 'major fault' caused service-wide disruption

A signalling fault caused trains to grind to a halt at signal points and stations across the Metro network.

The "major problem" with the signalling system brought the Metro to a complete standstill for around 10 minutes on Tuesday afternoon.

The failure, which took place at South Gosforth Control Centre , began around 1.10pm on Tuesday, and passengers were warned to "stand by for updates".

But by around 1.20pm, the system was up and running once again, though not to timetable.

A Nexus spokesperson said: "We are now running to all destinations.

"We experienced a fault with the signalling control system, so trains were stood down for 10 minutes not going anywhere, but that's now been rectified."

On Twitter , Metro representatives confirmed the system was now "subject to delays".
