Metro delays set to last 'hours' after overhead cables damaged by falling branches

Metro passengers are facing a day of disruption after falling branches damaged the overhead wires in North Tyneside .

The incident happened between Percy Main and Howdon and engineers are currently on site attempting to repair the damage.

However, Nexus has warned passengers that this could take a number of hours.

Passengers are advised to travel to North Tyneside via Four Lane Ends while the service suspension is in place.

There is also ticket acceptance on:

  • Go North East buses 1, 1A, 1B, 309 from Newcastle to the North Tyneside coast
  • Go North East buses 11 from Wallsend to the coast
  • Stagecoach buses 12, 22, 40 Newcastle to Wallsend 39 Newcastle to Byker

There is also a replacement bus service, the number 900, calling at all affected stations in the area.

A spokesman said: “Metro services have been suspended between North Shields and St James since 9am today due to fallen branches on the overhead lines.

“This occurred on the section line between Percy Main and Howdon. Staff are at the site assessing the damage and preparing to carry out out repairs. We expect the repairs to take a number of hours at least.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to passengers. If you are travelling from North Tyneside then where possible it is best to get the Metro into Newcastle via Four Lane Ends.



“We have Metro ticket acceptance in the affected area on services 1, 1A, 1B, 309 from Newcastle to the North Tyneside coast and the 11 from Wallsend to the coast. "
