Metro delays after medical emergency on board train in Gateshead

Commuters experienced delays after a Metro train was forced to stop mid-journey in Gateshead after a woman experienced a medical episode.

Those travelling on the Metro this afternoon (September 27) will have experienced delays of approximately 15 minutes to trains operating between Pelaw and St James stations after passengers were forced to alight the train.

A woman became unwell during her journey and it became clear that she would require further medical assistance.

The train was removed from service and the other customers were asked to alight and wait for the next train through Pelaw.

The driver and another member of the public administered first aid at the scene while they awaited the arrival of personnel from North East Ambulance Service.

The train was moved to sidings at Pelaw in the meantime while they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The woman's condition is unknown at this time.

A Nexus spokesperson said: “There was a medical emergency on board a Metro train at Pelaw just after 4.30pm this afternoon. A female customer became unwell during her journey.

“The train was removed from service and the other customers were asked to alight and wait for the next train through Pelaw. Our driver and another member of the public have administered first aid.

“The train is currently in Pelaw sidings and awaiting the arrival of the North East Ambulance Service.”

The North East Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
