Metro and rail services suspended after collision at East Boldon level crossing

Metro and rail services faced severe disruption after a head on collision at East Boldon level crossing in Sunderland.

The crash yesterday evening was between two cars took place near East Boldon Metro Station but did not involve any trains. One man was trapped in one of the vehicles but was eventually freed by fire crews before being taken to hospital.

Metro services were suspended between Gateshead and Sunderland. All lines were also blocked between Newcastle and Sunderland with disruption reported between Middlesbrough and the MetroCentre.

Tyne and Wear Fire & Rescue Service confirmed two engines responded to the incident. Services remained suspended until the vehicles involved could be removed from the crossing.

The collision took place on Station Approach and the road was shut from Cleadon Lane to A184 Front Street. Metro and rail services are now back up and running but with severe delays.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Station Approach in East Boldon shortly before 7.30pm this evening.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, one crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a clinical team leader, and transported one patient to South Tyneside Hospital."

When the incident was ongoing a Nexus spokesperson said: "Metro services are suspended at Brockley Whins to Sunderland due to a road traffic accident at East Boldon level crossing.

“The incident involves two cars. No trains are involved.

“Services on the Network Rail section of line are disrupted while emergency services deal with the other incident.”
