Metra train hits, kills pedestrian in New Lenox

Sun-Times file photo

A person was hit by a Metra train Wednesday in southwest suburban New Lenox, disrupting service on part of the Rock Island District line during the morning commute.

Inbound train No. 506 fatally hit the person about 8:30 a.m. near Church Street in New Lenox, according to Metra spokesman Tom Miller.

The Will County coroner’s office has not released information about the death.

The train had departed Joliet for Chicago at 8:21 a.m., Miller said. Train movement remained halted in both directions near the site of the crash for about two hours.

Trains only operated between Mokena and Chicago while the tracks were blocked, but normal service has since been restored, Miller said.
