Metra cancels two trains after Joliet derailment

Feb. 20--Two Metra trains were canceled Friday morning following a minor derailment in the Joliet Coach Yard, Metra officials said.

Train 916 on Metra's Heritage Corridor derailed in the coach yard just before 6:35 a.m. Metra officials said the train would not operate because of the derailment. Train 918, which was scheduled to depart 7:05 a.m., had not left as of 7:45 a.m. due to the derailment.

The Rock Island District's Train 302 was also canceled due to the derailment. Train 302 also operates out of the Joliet Coach Yard. Trains 416 and 616 out of the Rock Island District will accommodate any passengers, according to a Metra service alert. Train 414 was rescheduled to depart from New Lenox due to the derailment.

No one was hurt in the derailment, said Metra spokesman Michael Gillis. Officials could not immediately say what caused the derailment.

The frigid temperatures were also causing problems for some Metra trains. Inbound trains on Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line were experiencing up to 15-minute delays due to a weather-related switch problem, according to a service alert.

Trains 318 and 320 on the Union Pacific North Line were delayed about 20 minutes after crews had to perform emergency track repairs near Lake Bluff.
