Meth pills seized after car chase in Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI -- Police seized 240,000 methamphetamine pills after a car chase in Mae Sai district early on Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 1am on a road along the border between tambons Mae Sai and Ko Chang. A grey Honda Civic ran through a checkpoint at Ban Sanmana, ignoring a signal for it to stop for a search.

The checkpoint was set up earlier on a tip-off from informants that a quantity of drugs would be smuggled across the border from Myanmar to an area near Ban Si Pa Daeng in tambon Ko Chang.

Police officers gave chase to the vehicle. In front of Ban San Sai School in tambon Mae Sai a straw bag was thrown out of the car, which continued to speed away in the direction of Ban San Phak Hi.

The police retrieved the bag and continued the chase for about 15 kilometres.  At Ban Muang Daeng, the car turned right into a soi leading to a temple. The car then stopped, and two men were seen running into the dark.

The police found several more bags in the rear of the car.  Altogether, the bags recovered by the police contained 240,000 methamphetamine pills.
