Meteor lights up Canberra's skies overnight

Canberra's skies lit up with what most are speculating was a meteor last night.

Footage posted to social media on Thursday evening, May 21, shows a bright light appear in the sky before falling past the horizon.

Astrophysicist at the Australian National University confirmed the object was a meteor, probably about 30 to 50cm in size.

"The green-blue colour indicates it was a meteor - usually with iron and nickel which is often on them," he said.

"The bright flash mid-way means it likely fragmented."

Dr Tucker said while there are "hundreds of tons of rock hitting Earth" daily, most are too small to see. There are larger ones that pass every few days, but mostly only visible in places uninhabited by humans.

"The special coincidence was it happened at a good time, early evening, and over lots of populated areas," he said.

Had it been the middle of the night, few would have seen it."

The event was also captured in the livestream of a Capital Football game as commentators focused on the match.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) described us as a "massive meteorite".

"Massive meteorite seen in Canberra," @ Harrison_23 posted.

"Sightings in Sydney too and I'm sure elsewhere. Huge!!!"
