Meteor caught on home security camera exploding over UK skies

This is the moment a home CCTV camera caught a remarkable scene in the night sky.

Mark Statham's surveillance kit, which her bought as a simple extra security measure, has captured a meteor exploding in the UK sky.

It happened in the early hours of May 20 above Swansea, where the 47-year-old lives, and at first he thought it was just a late night fireworks display.

But as he looked at it more and more he started to think it was an object from outer space, reports Wales Online .

He sent the clip to the  UK Meteor Network  - which then confirmed it was a meteor.

Mr Statham said: "I had not seen anything like that in the past and I was wondering what it was.

"I thought it was a firework going off at night, or that someone had a party somewhere or there were exuberant youths.

"Then the more I looked at it, it did not look like a firework. I thought it was a meteor hence my message I sent to the UK Meteor Network and they said I was right.

"It was quite surprising really, I'm guessing it has come into the atmosphere at a time of day where by chance it was visible."
