Metallica visit Cliffs of Moher and call into Co Clare restaurant for surprise visit

Metallica travelled to the west of Ireland after their Slane gig on Saturday.

The heavy metal group took to the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare on Monday to take in some of Ireland’s most famous tourist spots.

The band got hungry on their travels and popped into Vaughan’s Anchor Inn in Liscannor at around 6pm for dinner.

Restaurant owner Lisa Vaughan revealed that she wasn’t expecting the visit at all.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, she said: “We heard a helicopter overhead yesterday afternoon, so we knew there was somebody big in the area but we didn't know who.

"They parked the helicopter in a spot behind the hotel and went up along the cliffs of Moher and then popped into us before they went. They were superstars, normal, down to earth, ordinary people.

"One of our chefs, Gary Davis would be a big fan of theirs so the lead singer, James Hetfield went into the kitchen to say hello to him."

The news that the rockers were in town wasn’t kept quiet and soon enough a large crowd had gathered outside to see the group.

Ms Vaughan added: “There was a big crowd gathered outside the hotel and some of them even came up to the table looking for photos and autographs but they didn’t seem to mind.”

The band played Slane Castle on Saturday night and it was their first Irish gig in 10 years.
