Meta will reportedly release affordable Meta Quest 3 in 2023

Meta, formerly Facebook, is gearing up to release the Meta Quest Pro VR set sometime in the not-too-distant-future, and a new leak suggests the company has plans for a Meta Quest 3 VR set as well. The leak comes from YouTuber Brad Lynch (first spotted by Road to VR), a hardware analyst and the source of previous, reliable VR leaks, who says he found data files showing the Meta Quest 3’s design and specs.

Lynch says the Meta Quest 3 is a step up from Meta Quest 2, Meta’s current offering that was originally released as Oculus Quest 2, but it won’t be as powerful as the Meta Quest Pro. How powerful Quest Pro may be is still up for speculation, though Meta may be planning an official reveal or even full launch of the high-end set at Meta Connect on Oct. 11, 2022.

Either way, Lynch believes Quest 3 is a “low-end,” affordable option intended for broad consumer appeal, for those who don’t want to spend upwards of $1,000 or thereabouts on a more powerful set. What that means in practical terms is that the Meta Quest 3 likely won’t support demanding AR applications or have extensive use outside of gaming. AR games, similar to Pokemon GO, would likely still work, though.

As always with leaks, the Meta Quest 3 news is unofficial until Meta actually announces the set. However, with Sony set to release its PS VR 2 set in 2023 as well – even though the PS creator thinks the metaverse and VR sets are a waste of time and effort – it makes sense that Meta would want to create a stronger consumer base and remain competitive
