Meta Layoffs and Zuckerberg’s Reported “Beach Water Person” Job Sparks Debate

However, the announcement has drawn additional attention following reports that Zuckerberg may also be hiring for a highly unusual role at his private estate in Kauai, Hawaii, even as thousands of workers face job uncertainty.

According to reports, the position—internally described as a “beach water person”—was recently listed on Greenhouse through West 10, the Zuckerberg family office. The role reportedly involves seasonal, on-call responsibilities focused on water safety and ocean-related activities at Zuckerberg’s sprawling Hawaii compound.

The job description suggests a hybrid position combining duties such as beach and pool lifeguarding, boat deckhand support, and assisting with recreational ocean sports. These activities include stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, snorkeling, and other water-based experiences for Zuckerberg, his family, and guests.

While the title itself has raised eyebrows for its vagueness, the responsibilities appear to center on ensuring safety during water-based activities while also supporting recreational operations at the private estate. The role has been described in reports as a blend of lifeguard, surf instructor, and yacht support staff, potentially offering a competitive salary.

The listing reportedly drew widespread attention online before disappearing from the Greenhouse careers page shortly afterward, adding to speculation about the hiring process and its timing.

The reported job opening also aligns with Zuckerberg’s increasing interest in ocean sports and water-based recreation. Over the past few years, he has frequently been seen engaging in activities such as surfing, hydrofoiling, and wake surfing. In a Bloomberg interview for The Circuit with Emily Chang, Zuckerberg even incorporated wake-surfing into the conversation while discussing his Lake Tahoe residence, highlighting differences between wake surfing and traditional surfing techniques.

Much of Zuckerberg’s lifestyle is now centered around his expansive Kauai estate in Hawaii. The property has long attracted media attention due to its scale and reported features, which include private compounds, extensive security infrastructure, guest houses, agricultural operations, and cattle ranching. Some reports have also suggested the presence of underground facilities, though such claims remain unverified.

The contrast between Meta’s widespread layoffs and the reported hiring has sparked debate online. On the same day the layoffs were announced, teams in Singapore reportedly received termination emails as early as 4 a.m., adding to employee concerns amid the company’s ongoing restructuring and shift toward artificial intelligence initiatives.

As Meta continues to reposition itself around AI and long-term growth strategies, the juxtaposition of corporate downsizing with luxury private estate hiring has become a talking point in discussions about tech industry inequality and executive lifestyles.
