Met Police won't investigate Downing Street Christmas party

The Metropolitan Police has said footage of Downing Street's Christmas party 'does not provide evidence of a breach' and will not be investigated further.

The police force has released a statement after footage, obtained by ITV, was published online showing Downing Street Staff holding a Christmas Party on December 18, 2020.

At the time, much of the country had been placed in 'Tier 3' restrictions, with Liverpool City Region in Tier 2.

The Government's rules meant no households in the City Region could mix indoors and hospital visiting arrangements were limited to exceptional circumstances.

But on December 18, Downing Street staff are alleged to have held a party, where they reportedly played games, served food and drinks and revelries went on past midnight.

Met Police said the video "does not provide evidence of a breach".

In a statement, the force said: "The Metropolitan Police Service has received a significant amount of correspondence relating to allegations reported in the media that the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) Regulations were breached at gatherings at No 10 Downing Street in November and December 2020.

"All this correspondence has been considered by detectives in detail, as well as footage published by ITV News. The correspondence and footage does not provide evidence of a breach of the Health Protection Regulations, but restates allegations made in the media.

"Based on the absence of evidence and in line with our policy not to investigate retrospective breaches of such Regulations, the Met will not commence an investigation at this time.

"The Met has had discussions with the Cabinet Office in relation to the investigation by the Cabinet Secretary. If any evidence is found as a result of that investigation, it will be passed to the Met for further consideration."

By midnight on December 18 in the Liverpool City Region, four people were dead, having tested positive for coronavirus within a 28-day period.

Two were from Liverpool, one from Wirral and one from Halton.

Across the United Kingdom, 514 people in total died that day within 28 days of their first positive test for COVID-19.

Of the deaths registered in the week ending December 18 2020 in England and Wales, 2,986 mentioned "novel coronavirus (COVID-19)", accounting for 22.9% of all deaths.

That week deaths involving COVID-19 increased compared with the week ending December 11 2020 by 230 deaths.
