THE Metropolitan Police will look again at UK nationals fighting for Israel amid the genocide in Gaza, it has been reported.
The Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) and Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) submitted a 240-page referral to the force in August 2025, alleging that 10 UK nationals had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity while fighting for the Israelis.
The police looked into the case, narrowing its scope to four British nationals, before advising earlier this year that it would not be moving forward with the investigation and there would be no realistic prospect of convictions.
Now, Declassified UK reports that the Met told PILC last week that a "fresh scoping exercise" would be undertaken, referring to the four identifiable British nationals it had previously narrowed the case to.
A scoping exercise is typically carried out by the force's war crimes team, who will later determine whether a full investigation will go ahead.
The latest development comes after Lubna Speitan, a British-Palestinian human rights campaigner, had threatened the Met with judicial review proceedings.
PILC had accused the Met of wrongly applying its own policy and not taking into account relevant considerations.
PILC solicitor Paul Heron said: “We welcome the Metropolitan Police’s withdrawal of its previous decision and to undertake a fresh scoping exercise. This is an important and responsible step which recognises that the earlier decision should no longer stand.
“These allegations concern some of the gravest crimes known to international law. Where there are identifiable British nationals alleged to have participated in such crimes, it is essential that investigative decisions are taken on the fullest evidential basis possible”.
According to Declassified UK, more than 2000 Brits have served in Israel's military during the genocide – consisting of British citizens and British Israelis.
