A former Metropolitan Police officer appeared in court over a claim he had a four-year relationship with a witness in one of his investigations.
PC Kenneth McGrath has been charged with misconduct in a public office and appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Tuesday morning.
It is alleged McGrath, 44, struck up a sexual relationship with a witness in a case he was investigating.
The charge is dated between June 25, 2018 and September 1, 2022.
According to the allegation, the officer is accused of “wilfully misconducting himself to such a degree as to amount to an abuse of the public's trust”.
It is said McGrath “conducted a sexual relationship with a witness in a case you were charged with investigating”.
On Tuesday, McGrath did not enter a plea to the charge as District Judge Daniel Sternberg sent the case to Southwark crown court for preliminary hearing on July 8.
McGrath, from Wimbledon, was granted bail on the condition he does not contact the alleged victim in the case.
Scotland Yard said McGrath is no longer serving in the Met.
“A former Met officer has been charged with misconduct in public office”, it said in a statement.
“Former PC Kenny McGrath, who was attached to Specialist Crime, was charged on Tuesday, 13 May with one count of misconduct in public office when he was both on and off duty.
“It relates to an allegation of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a woman between 2018 and 2022 while he was a serving officer.
“He will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 10 June.”
