Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Wales this week

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across parts of Wales this week.

The warning comes into force from 10am on Friday, August 6, and ends at 9am on Saturday, August 7.

The Met Office also says there "is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater." The forecaster has also warned where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport services.

It comes as Wales has seen a wide variation in its weather, from a July heatwave to much cooler temperatures and torrential rain. There is hope that prolonged warm weather will return in August.

The latest warning mainly affects mid to north wales as well as large parts of England and Scotland.

What areas are affected?

Aberystwyth and Bangor are included in the warning as is north Wales in its entirety. Mid-Wales is also expected to be affected with everything north of Newtown included.

Snowdonia National Park is included in the warning. Visitors should take care when visiting the mountain range after two women were injured last week after being struck by lighting at the summit.

What should we expect?

According to the Met Office: "Slow moving thundery downpours may cause localised surface water impacts."

Other potential impacts because of the storms include:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater.
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

Though there is some changeable weather at the start of August, things are looking warmer during the middle of the month. Forecasters at the Met Office say by Thursday, August 12, there are signs of more settled conditions from then as higher pressure develops.

And they say we can look forward to higher than average temperatures with an "increasing chance of hotter spells developing as the month progresses".
