Met Office yellow warning for Wales extended as three days of heavy rain now set to cause disruption and flooding

The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for rain in Wales as the country braces for three days of torrential downpours.

Parts of north Wales could receive as much as seven inches, or 200mm, of rain during the warning, which comes into force at midnight on Tuesday (January 19).

According to the forecast: "Several days of persistent and occasional heavy rain are expected to affect the region."

By early on Thursday, forecasters are predicting 30-60mm of rain to have fallen widely across the warning area, which includes all 22 of Wales' local authorities.

The weather warning is set to come into force at midnight on Tuesday (January 19) (Met Office)

As much as 100-150mm are possible over the high ground of Wales, while parts of north Wales could be hit with a whopping 200mm.

Residents are warned of the risk for flooding to homes and businesses, as well as damage to some buildings.

Fast flowing and deep floodwater is possible, "causing a danger to life", the Met Office said.

It's possible that some communities may become cut off by flooded roads, and driving conditions will be difficult.

Forecasters say strong winds will also accompany the rainfall and may add to travelling difficulties across areas higher and more exposed routes.

Strong guests could also cause power cuts and loss of other services.

The warning will come to an end at 12pm on Thursday.
