Met Office yellow thunderstorm warning for Leeds today

The Met Office has put a yellow warning for thunderstorms in place of a large part of the North of England, including Leeds.

Leeds is in the southern area of where the storms are predicted to take place. The storms therefore may cause disruption to travel in the area.

A yellow warning means the weather is likely to cause "low level impacts" with some disruption to travel. This means it is important to take the storm into account if you plan to travel anywhere today.

However, yellow warnings are also issued if the weather could cause severe disruption if the likelihood of the disruptions is lower.

This warning indicates the thunderstorms are likely between 1pm and 10pm this afternoon. The Met Office said: "Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding are likely to lead to difficult driving conditions and some temporary road closures.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could temporarily be lost."

If you need to drive in a storm the Met Office has issued advice which includes driving slowly, using dipped headlights and keeping your eye on the road as sudden spray can reduce both yours and other drivers visibility. You can read the full advice here and view the weather warning map here.
