Met Office weather warnings for snow amid 'Beast from the East 2' threat - UK towns and cities at risk

The Met Office has issued three weather warnings for ice and snow with parts of Eastern England at the greatest risk.

An ‘amber warning’ is in place for parts of East Anglia until 2pm today (Saturday, January 16).

Norwich sits on the border of the warning zone, spreading north towards Holt and Hunstanton, west to Ely, and south towards St Albans and Chelmsford.

The Met Office amber warning states: “A band of heavy snow is likely to bring disruption as it moves eastwards today.

“Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers. Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely

“There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

"Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.”

A separate ‘yellow warning’ for snow until 8pm swallows up the ‘amber’ zone, and greater proportions of the south east; from Canterbury to Oxford in the west and Skegness to the north.

A greater, separate yellow warning for snow and ice is also in place until 6pm today, taking in parts of the Midlands north of Birmingham, and the majority of Northern England, including Leeds and Sheffield, and Scotland.

The Met Office on what to expect from UK snow warning

  • There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel

  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected

  • A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

  • A small chance that untreated pavements and cycle paths become dangerous, posing a greater risk of injury
