Met Office weather warnings for ice, rain and wind issued across Scotland as travel chaos expected

Three separate weather warnings for wind, rain and ice have been issued for over the next 24 hours.

Strong winds, heavy rain and ice will hit the country through the course of today with disruption to travel expected.

Bus, rail and could be affected with expected to take longer.

Flooding is also predicted to be an issue due to the persistent rain throughout the .

A warning for rain came into force at 6am this morning and will last until 3pm today.

The west of the country will see the worst of the rain with 20 to 40mm likely to fall during the period of the warning.

Meanwhile, a warning for ice has been put in place by the for the north of the country which comes into force from 10pm tonight and will last until 10am on Wednesday.

A Met Office statement read: "Icy patches are likely to develop during Tuesday night as frequent blustery, heavy showers of rain and hail fall onto cold surfaces, especially untreated roads and pavements.

"Meanwhile, above 200 metres elevation, showers will fall as snow at times, perhaps with 2-6 cm of snow above 400 metres, blown along by strong, gusty winds."

There is currently a warning in place for wind in the east of the country. Gusts of up to 70mph are likely to batter coastal areas and higher ground, while winds of 60mph could hit inland.

The warning was issued at 5am today and will last until 5pm tonight.

A Met Office statement read: "Winds will strengthen through the morning with gusts of 50-60 mph likely inland, and 60-70 mph around some coasts and over higher ground.

"The strongest winds will probably occur ahead of an intense band of rain that is expected to move quickly eastwards during the day, winds easing once this clears."

Earlier today two lorries toppled over on the A1 motorway in East Lothian due to heavy winds in the area.

The road is currently closed in both directions with emergency services still at the scene.
