Met Office weather warning: Thunderstorms could cause floods and lightning strikes

A new thunderstorm has been issued by the Met Office covering large parts of the country including Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset.

The storm is set to develop across England and Wales as early as Sunday morning putting some areas at risk of heavy rain, flooding and lightning strikes.

"Some places could see 15 to 20mm in an hour, and perhaps up to 50mm before storms fade, and hail may affect a few spots, " the Met Office reports.

In the southern areas, the heavy downpours could see a "further 10-20mm. The yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place from midnight on Sunday until 6pm.

What to expect according to the Met office

  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life and some communities might become cut off if roads flood
  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
