Met Office weather warning issued as Storm Barra to batter Merseyside tomorrow

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Merseyside as Storm Barra hits tomorrow.

Warnings have been issued for the majority of the UK as the nation will be battered by the wind and rain.

Winds of up to 70mph should be expected as well as downpours of rain and even snow in some places as the storm arrives.

Heavy rain is forecast for Wales and the southern half of England, which will turn to snow and sleet in the North and Scotland.

Travel delays should be expected, with some short term loss of power and other services also being possible.

Frank Saunders, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "Strong winds arriving across the west through Tuesday morning, will spread inland and reach eastern areas through the afternoon and early evening."

He added: "Gusts of 45-50 mph are expected widely, with 60-70 mph in exposed coastal locations. The strongest winds will ease across inland areas into the overnight period."

Brent Walker, deputy chief meteorologist, said: "A band of rain will turn to snow across northern England and Scotland through Tuesday. Two to five cm of snow is expected to accumulate quite widely across the warning area, but locally this could reach 10 cm, particularly in parts of the Southern Uplands and Highlands."

The meteorologist added: "Strong south-easterly winds will also lead to snow drifting in places, particularly over the highest routes, adding to poor visibilities."

Storm Barra will be the second named storm of the winter season, with Storm Arwen hitting us hard just last week.

The first storm, Storm Arwen, caused travel disruption as trees were ripped from the ground across the Merseyside region.

Other areas saw power cuts, with some properties still being affected as some homes are still in darkness.
