Met Office weather warning for heavy rain extended as up to 70mm could fall in under 6 hours

The Met Office has extended the timings and area covered by a weather warning in place for heavy rain.

The weather agency has warned that widespread rain is likely to cause disruption and flooding on Tuesday (September 24).

The yellow weather warning for rain has been extended to include much of the country, including Bristol, and will now be in effect from 4am until 11pm tomorrow.

Forecasters says heavy downpours are likely to bring disruption to travel.

The Met Office has warned: "Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life and some communities may be cut off by flooded roads

"Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."

The Met Office's outlook for the South West on Tuesday says: "The often heavy showers will continue, with the risk of hail and thunder.

"They will ease by midday, but they will be replaced by outbreaks of rain, with strong winds. Maximum temperature 20C."

What the warning says

Spells of very heavy rain are expected to move northeastwards across much of England and Wales during Tuesday.

While many areas will see some heavy rain with 15-30 mm widely, some places may see up to 70 mm, much of this in a relatively short space of time, typically less than 6 hours.

Thunder and lightning is also possible along with strong gusty winds.
