Met Office weather warning as 'severe' 70mph gale force to hit central Scotland

The Met Office has issued a 'severe' weather warning as strong winds of up to 70mph are set to batter the country today.

The strong winds come as parts of Scotland were issued a yellow weather warning by the Met Office today - the same day world leaders are also descending onto Scottish soil to mark day one of COP26.

Glasgow was hit with a yellow warning only a few days ago, however much of the west coast including areas such as Ayr were hit yet again. These strong winds are set to continue for much of the day however will ease at around 10am.

South West Scotland and Strathclyde are said to be the worst hit by the gale force winds with the weather warning reading: "Gales or severe gales are expected in many coastal areas during the early hours of Monday before easing later on Monday morning.

"Winds will gust quite widely to between 50 and 60 mph along coasts, perhaps reaching 70 mph in the most exposed spots. Inland gusts are expected to be a little lower, peaking in the 40s or low 50s mph."

Due to the weather and recent flooding, traffic is set to remain disrupted especially with world leaders now on their way to the city.

So what can Scotland expect for the rest of today?

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Damage to trees is possible

Let's take a look at Glasgow's weather for the week ahead:

  • November 1 (Monday): Light rain and a fresh breeze. Highs of 10C and lows of 4C
