Met Office weather: Strong winds to batter UK coastline as warning issued

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning as strong winds are set to batter the UK coastline tomorrow (Tuesday, July 6).

The banana-shaped weather alert covers much of the south and southeast coastline and could disrupt transport.

Bus and train services could be affected and lorries could be blown about by the winds.

The yellow warning will last from 1am tomorrow morning (Tuesday, July 6) until 12pm the same day.

What you can expect

The Met Office explained their yellow warning as follows:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Some damage to temporary outdoor structures possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves

Bristol looks set to escape the worse of the weather, but heavy downpours are set to batter our city from 7pm.

Today's outlook

Northern parts of the country will see rain and showers, especially Scotland where some heavy downpours are possible this afternoon.

A few showers are possible in the south but these lighter and more isolated than in recent days, with some sunshine.

Rain will reach the far southwest later, bringing a 12-hour deluge to some parts of the West Country.

Showers mostly dying out but some persisting across Scotland. Clear spells for many, but heavy rain moving northwards across much of England and Wales. Gales affecting some English Channel coasts.

Tomorrow

Rain will clear eastwards from England and winds will ease in the far southeast.

Sunny spells and showers for most; showers heaviest and most frequent in the northwest.
