Met Office weather forecast warns Hurricane Lorenzo to hit UK following huge rain storms

The Met Office has warned that Hurricane Lorenzo is due to hit the UK later this week.

The weather system that is currently hailed as the strongest hurricane this far north and east in the Atlantic basin, will bring high winds and torrential downpours when it makes landfall.

But, Britain will thankfully only get the tail end, and the category four storm is expected to dramatically weaken as it heads towards Ireland.

It is set to hit the coastline on Thursday and comes after four days of yellow weather warnings for Merseyside.

Rain has brought travel delays and localised flooding, as we head for another two days of heavy downpours.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates told the Mirror : "Lorenzo is a real beast of a storm.

"It will be one of Europe's strongest ever tropical storms, as the Azores are part of Europe.

"Lorenzo is expected to move to the UK by Thursday - bringing a couple of days with potentially worse conditions than this weekend.

"There are scenarios from gales to storm-force 70mph-plus gusts, but there’s uncertainty. Big waves and heavy rain are likely, with the west most likely to be affected.

"Before then, five or six inches’ rain will fall between Saturday and Tuesday in the wettest places. It’s clearly enough for flooding concerns.

"People should keep up-to-date with warnings and consider their travel options."
