Met Office weather forecast reveals how long the wet weather will last

Wales is currently in the grip of torrential rain showers , with a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms issued across the entire country.

The heavy downpours have already caused carnage on the roads this morning with multiple accidents - including one car aquaplaning off the M4 - causing severe delays for those commuting eastbound along the motorway between Bridgend and Cardiff.

Met Office forecasters have also warned there is a chance that homes and businesses could be damaged by floodwater, lightning strikes , hail or strong winds.

So the big question on everyone's lips is: "How long is it all set to last?"

The good news is that, despite up to 50mm of rain possibly set to fall in the space of a few hours, most of the bad weather could dissipate as the evening wears on.

Thunderstorms are forecast for much of this afternoon until about 3/4pm, giving way to sunny intervals before turning overcast come sunset. The maximum temperature will be 21°C with an overnight of 10°C.

And here's how it breaks down for the rest of the week.

Wednesday:

Some heavy downpours in the north to begin. Drier and brighter later, with a few showers, but these will be less heavy than recently. Blustery winds at times. Maximum temperature 21°C.

The weather forecast for 1pm on Tuesday shows widespread storms (Met Office)
By 7pm the weather has settled down (Met Office)
The weather on the south coast looks a little brighter by Wednesday (Met Office)
With a lot more sunshine by lunchtime on Thursday (Met Office)

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Mainly dry and sunny, but there will be a risk of catching showers during the day, with some turning heavy or thundery. Feeling warm in the sunny spells.
