Met Office weather forecast predicts rising temperatures as North East approaches weekend

Temperatures are set to rise across the North East by this coming weekend.

The Met Office predicts some midweek showers followed by "generally much warmer" temperatures on Saturday and Sunday.

The weather has been pretty bleak across much of the region the past two days, with the Northumberland County Show on Bank Holiday Monday a washout.

Tuesday also started with showers, although sunshine broke through the clouds in Newcastle city centre later in the afternoon.

This is the Met Office forecast from Wednesday to Sunday:

Wednesday

After a dry and sunny start, cloud will thicken from the west during the day, bringing some rain to western parts, but eastern areas should stay dry.

Maximum temperature: 15C

Thursday and Friday

The rain is set to continue into the end of the week.

The Met Office says: "The following days are expected to receive an oscillation of breeze and cloud late in the afternoon. Leading to more cloudy and wet conditions.

"There might be a slight change on Friday with persistent showers."

Expected temperature: 18C

Saturday and Sunday

If you've got plans this weekend, you could be in for some better luck - on Saturday at least.

The Met Office predicts clearer skies and brighter - potentially humid - conditions.

However, the Met Office warns: "Prolonged thundery showers are expected on Sunday leading to cooler conditions."

Expected temperature: 19C
