Temperatures plunged to -5°C in parts of Wales, but after a cold and frost start temperatures are set to rise.
Wales forecaster Sabrina Lee said that the low was recorded in Powys, but that there were temperature contrasts across the country.
"Cloud has moved in to north Wales, so temperatures there are generally holding a few degrees above freezing," she said on Friday. "It is clearer in parts of south and mid Wales, which means it is colder, so do watch out for a sharp frost and some icy patches."
Derek Brockway says the following nights will be " cloudier and less cold and staying dry thanks to high pressure".
The Met Office forecast for Wales on Friday says that after a frost and "mostly sunny start" it will turn cloudier.
"Patchy cloud will soon arrive across North Wales and these cloudier skies gradually filtering southwards through the day." the forecast says. "However, occasional sunny spells are still likely for many. Light winds and feeling less cold. Maximum temperature 8 °C."
Friday night into Saturday morning will be less cold that last night, but temperatures will dip close to freezing where the skies are clear. The m inimum temperature is set to be -1 °C.
The outlook to Tuesday in Wales says: " Another dry on Saturday albeit often rather cloudy day is in store. Some bright or sunny spells are likely in places and with light winds it won't feel too cold. Maximum temperature 9 °C.
"The o utlook for Sunday to Tuesday is r emaining mostly dry. Often fairly cloudy skies with perhaps some drizzle over the hills. Some sunshine is likely at times with patchy frost and fog overnight where skies stay clear."
