Met Office weather forecast for day two of Africa Oye

A yellow weather warning has been issued ahead of day two of Africa Oye.

The UK's largest celebration of African music and culture have taken over Sefton Park this weekend. The festival is heading strong into its 31st year boasting a line-up of live acts, DJs and workshops for everyone to enjoy.

Merseyside has been hit with some warm weather recently, with temperatures reaching as high as 30C. And while the nice weather has continued for day one of Africa Oye yesterday, the Met Office has shared its predictions for what we can expect on Sunday, June 18.

It's going to be a cloudy start to the day on Sunday morning with some sunny spells. Temperatures will likely reach up to 22C during the early afternoon. But things will soon take a drastic turn.

Much to the disappointment of many, the Met Office predicts thunderstorms can be expected on Sunday. A yellow weather warning is in place from 12pm until 11.59pm and a warning has been issued for heavy rain and storms which will likely bring some disruption.

Thunderstorms are expected from around 2pm and 4pm before the rain subsides later in the evening, before the weather worsens and we could see more stormy skies. The Met Office says you can expect:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and possible road closures
  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, perhaps temporarily cutting off one or two communities
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

The Met Office predicts: "A few outbreaks of thundery rain are possible overnight and during the morning, but the main likelihood of heavy showers and thunderstorms is during the afternoon and evening, with longer spells of thundery rain in places. Some places may miss most (or all) of the rain, but others could see 30mm in an hour or less, and perhaps a few spots seeing 60 to 80 mm within three to six hours.

"There is also the potential for frequent lightning, strong winds and hail. While uncertainties remain regarding the extent and focus, it is perhaps areas from London northwards across the Midlands, eastern England, east Wales and southern areas of northern England, that currently seem most likely to see disruption."
