Met Office warns winds of up to 65mph expected to hit the North East

Strong gusts of wind are returning to parts of the North East, the Met Office warns.

An immediate weather warning has been issued in parts of the region as wind speeds of up to 65mph are expected.

The main areas affected are Northumberland and County Durham, with a yellow warning in place on Friday until 10pm.

The blustery weather could cause some travel disruption on Friday afternoon and into the evening.

High-sided vehicles could be stopped from travelling on exposed routes and bridges during the warning period.

Public transport could also face delays and there may be power cuts if lines are brought down or damaged.

The southwesterly winds are predicted to strengthen throughout the afternoon and evening.

The strongest winds are expected over high ground where gusts of 55 to 65mph are likely.

Saturday is expected to be windy again although it should stay dry and sunny.

Some showers are expected on Sunday morning although the winds will be much calmer.
