Map reveals where thunderstorms could hit UK today as Met Office warning comes into effect

Thunderstorms could sweep across the capital on Monday, as temperatures are expected to reach 23C.

A Met Office yellow weather warning came into effect at midday on Monday - lasting until 10pm - as scattered storms threaten to cause localised flooding and travel disruption.

Storms are expected to develop throughout the day, bringing short but intense bursts of rain, along with lightning and hail.

Areas likely to be affected include London, the South West, and the West Midlands.

Showers could deliver 20-30mm of rainfall in under an hour, with up to 40 to 50mm possible within one to two hours in areas where thunderstorms intensify.

It comes as temperatures are set to soar next week as the capital experiences a mini-heatwave, with highs of 24°C forecast from Monday through Wednesday.

Driving conditions could be affected by the weather, with possible road closures, as well as cancellations to some rail and bus services.

There is also a risk of power outages in some areas, along with the potential for localised flooding to homes and businesses.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been put in place for London on Monday (Met Office)

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “On Monday itself, we could see some particularly vigorous thunderstorms developing, most likely in Wales and parts of southern England, whilst elsewhere during this whole period, dry, fine, and increasingly warm conditions are expected.

“Should these thunderstorms develop, especially on Monday, there is potential for 25-35mm of rain to fall in an hour or so which may lead to some localised surface water flooding.

“Hail, lightning, and isolated strong wind gusts would be additional hazards.

“Forecasting exactly where thunderstorms will form at this range is fraught with uncertainty, so please stay up to date with the Met Office forecast through the weekend, and any severe weather warnings which may be issued.”

BBC Weather is forecasting two weeks of glorious sunshine in London with daily high temperatures dropping no lower than 21C.
