Met Office warns thunderstorms could cause flooding and disruption in the North East

The North East is set to be hit with heavy rain and thunderstorms as another weather warning is issued.

The Met Office has issued the region with another yellow weather warning as wet weather is expected for most of the weekend.

On Friday, most of country saw heavy downpours and thunderstorms which caused disruption.

On Saturday, forecasters said the North East would see "heavy rain and thunderstorms", which could cause flooding and disruption.

People have warned that their journeys may be affected by the wet weather, and there could be possible travel delays on trains.

The region has also been warned of possible flooding leading to damage to some buildings from lightning strikes.

The warning has been issued from midnight on Saturday, August 7 to 9pm on Sunday, August 8.

The weather forecast for Saturday states: "Largely cloudy, especially this morning, but with some sunny spells developing.

"Outbreaks of rain across the Pennines will give way to showers across the region, these sometimes heavy and thundery, with a chance of hail. Breezy, especially along the coast. Maximum temperature 20 °C."

And for Saturday evening, the Met Office said: " Scattered showers will continue, these becoming slow moving while remaining heavy at times, with a chance of hail and thunder this evening. Some clear intervals will develop. Minimum temperature 11 °C.

On Sunday, there will be scattered showers with a chance of hail and thunder.

There will be some sunny spells too.
