Met Office warns temperatures to plunge to -8C as snow and Arctic winds to hit UK this week

Forecasters are predicting that temperatures will plunge to -8°C as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning in some parts of the UK.

After a cold start to the week with some areas of the North East waking up to snow, the Met Office has predicted that temperatures remain low in the region.

Most of the UK is expected to feel the cold weather with Scotland's temperatures plunging to -8°C. Yellow weather warnings have been issued to Northern Ireland, parts of Scotland and Wales.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said wintry showers will sweep across Wales, south-west England, and down the east coast during the day, the Mirror reports.

He told the Mirror: "He said: "Through the afternoon we might even get a few homegrown showers, so really anywhere [Tuesday] could catch a wintry shower by the time we get to the end of the afternoon.

"Nobody is entirely immune to the odd bit of sleet or snow.

"It won't last long and it won't settle for very long either, but nobody is going to be 100 per cent safe from not seeing anything."

A statement on the Met Office website says there will be " scattered snow showers " on Tuesday. It says: "A sunny but cold start to Tuesday, with scattered snow showers.

"These will move quickly in the strong northerly wind, mostly during the afternoon, giving temporary accumulations over high ground. Significant wind chill expected. Maximum temperature 4 °C."

Forecasters have predicted that it will be another cold night for the region with 'widespread frost' expected to develop early tonight.

For Wednesday, it is expected to be less cold and generally cloudier 'though dry and bright with some morning sunshine.'
