Met Office warns of floods and disruption in North East as yellow weather warning is issued

A yellow weather warning has been issued for the North East which could be battered by "persistent rain".

The Met Office warning is in place from 6am on Wednesday to 6am on Thursday and there is a risk of flooding in the region.

There are several more severe flood warnings in place further South in the UK.

The North East warning covers Newcastle , Northumberland, Gateshead, Durham and Sunderland as well as North and South Tyneside.

It reads: "Rain is expected to become more persistent during Wednesday and turn heavy at times.

"Many areas are likely to receive 20-30mm of rain, with a few locations over higher parts of the Pennines and North Yorkshire Moors having 50mm.

"The location of the heaviest and most persistent rainfall is still somewhat uncertain and the warning may be updated in the coming days."

  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
