Met Office Storm Ciara warning as 100mph winds to hit Merseyside

The Met Office is warning "flying debris" could pose a "danger to life" as Merseyside feels the force of Storm Ciara on Sunday.

The forecasters have issued an updated alert ahead of tomorrow, when the weather front is expected to hit the region.

Liverpool and the surrounding areas fall within an area now covered by an amber alert over the strength of winds predicted to batter the region.

It had previously been subject to a less severe, yellow warning.

The Met Office released new details of the impact they believe Storm Ciara could have just before 10am on Saturday.

The organisation said the storm will bring a spell of "very strong winds", warning disruption to travel is likely during Sunday.

It explained: "Widespread very strong winds will affect much of England and Wales during Sunday.

"Gusts of 60-70 mph will occur widely in inland areas and 70-80 mph along southern and western coasts.

"Heavy rain will accompany the strong winds leading to very poor driving conditions.

"The winds will slowly ease from the north during the latter part of the afternoon and through the evening."

The public was warned:

  • Flying debris could lead to injuries or danger to life
  • Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs expected
  • Longer journey times and cancellations, as road, rail, air and ferry services affected
  • Some roads and bridges closed
  • Power cuts with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Injuries and danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

Much of England and Wales is covered by the warning, with Merseyside falling within an area covered by an amber wind alert and yellow - a less severe warning level - over rainfall.

The warning covers the period between 8am and 9pm on Sunday.

Another forecaster, MetCheck, is reporting wind speeds could hit 100mph.

The organisation said: "Gusts of 100mph+ are possible late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon.

"Heavy rain will also develop on the cold front which moves Southeast through the course of the day with a moderate risk of a squall developing."

Concerns over the storm have led to changes on Merseyrail's Chester and Ellesmere Port lines on Sunday, with some services departing earlier or later.

Planned engineering work on the Southport line will still go ahead on Sunday with rail replacement buses in operation between Sandhills and Formby.

Passengers on all lines are advised to check the Merseyrail website for the most up-to-date information before travelling over the weekend, or contact our customer services team via Twitter @Merseyrail or WhatsApp on 0151 555 1111 for service updates.

Merseyrail is also advising people who live near railways to ensure trampolines, gazebos or similar items are fixed in place, as they become airborne very easily in strong winds and can end up on the railway resulting in disruption and danger.
