Met Office warns more thunderstorms are on the way after lightning strikes woke everybody up

If you missed out on the thunderstorms last night, you may get another chance to see lightning this week.

Another thunderstorm warning has been issued by the Met Office covering the North East as a result of the hot and humid weather.

The storms are expected to return between 3pm on Thursday and 4am on Friday.

The forecasters warn that the hot weather will spark scattered thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon which will continue overnight.

Sudden flooding, travel delays and power cuts could affect our region, with up to 30mm of rain expected in an hour for some areas.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Following a hot day (in places exceptionally so), scattered thunderstorms are likely to break out from late afternoon onwards.

"While some areas, particularly in the South of the warning area may well avoid the storms, where they do occur they could produce 20-30mm of rain in less than an hour, along with frequent lightning, hail and gusty winds.

"Perhaps the main focus will be later in the evening and into the first part of the night across northern England and southern and eastern parts of Scotland, where storms could be more widespread and locally intense."

Lightning strikes were captured around the North East in the early hours of Wednesday morning as a deluge of rain broke up the muggy, hot weather.

The next few days will again be hot and sunny before cooler temperatures and rain showers arrive in time for the weekend.
