Met Office warns flights could be cancelled as fog set to get worse

Weather experts at the Met Office have issued a fog warning for Merseyside and the North West this evening.

Much of the region has been blanketed in fog throughout the day , leading to stunning pictures of Liverpool landmarks shrouded in mist.

The Met Office has reported conditions could get worse over the coming hours.

Issuing a yellow weather warning, the organisation said:  "Fog patches will quickly thicken up and become more extensive this evening, some of these patches then dense with visibility less than 100 metres at times.

"Overnight, fog will tend to slowly lift."

The fog could cause travel delays, with flights from Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester Airport potentially at risk.

Public transport services could also be affected, as well as matchday traffic following the conclusion of Liverpool's match at home to Manchester United .

Anyone planning on travelling tonight is advised to check services in advance of setting off.

The warning is in place until midnight.

Overnight on Sunday temperatures will drop again, creating the potential for a frost in some parts of Merseyside and the surrounding area.

The fall in temperature has led Dr Owen Landeg, from  Public Health England,  to advise: "Keep any eye out for those who may need help staying warm, ensure they wear lots of thin layers and have everything they need.

"Older people and those with heart and lung problems are at risk of getting sick in cold weather."

He added that below 18 degrees, changes to the body mean that the risk of strokes, heart attacks and chest infections increase "so heating homes to this temperature is particularly important to stay well".
