Met Office warning of 'very warm' weather in long range forecasts for July

It's the first day of July and with travel abroad looking uncertain and complicated, sunseekers will be hoping for a baking hot summer at home.

Forecasters looking at the month ahead have warned though that there is an "increased risk of some very warm or hot spells occurring" across the UK.

So for many in the country it might be time to stock up on that sun cream and invest in a fan or even a paddling pool.

The Met Office has produced a long range forecast for the month ahead and expects fine and dry weather for much of the UK is most likely for the rest of July.

Giving its long range forecast for July 15 to 29, the Met Office added: "As is typical for the time of year, confidence is relatively low for this period, but fine and dry weather for much of the UK is most likely for the rest of July.

"There is however the possibility that occasional spells of rain may impact north-western areas, with a very low risk of thundery conditions developing at times across the south.

"Temperatures are likely to be above average for much of this period, with an increased risk of some very warm or hot spells occurring."

Here's the East Midlands weather forecast for the week ahead:

Today (July 1):

Dull with low cloud for eastern areas, and a chance of occasional light rain or drizzle, especially across Lincolnshire. Dry and brighter with rather warm bright or sunny spells further west. Feeling cool along the Lincolnshire coast. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Tonight:

Cloudy, misty across eastern locations, with perhaps a little light rain and drizzle. Further west dry with some clear spells, but also areas of mist and low cloud forming. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

Friday:

Generally dry but cloudy through the morning. Then as sunny spells break through so scattered showers will develop, these sometimes heavy and slow moving. Becoming warm. Maximum temperature 25 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Bright or sunny spells and showers throughout, these often heavy, occasionally thundery, and perhaps merging into longer spells of rain at times. Mist and low cloud may affect coasts. Warm.
